Pre-requisites

Please check that you meet the requirements below before enrolling on this course:

• Basic understanding of electrical systems is recommended
• Suitable for both qualified tradespeople and those from related industries

Formal craft qualification e.g. National or Scottish Vocational Qualification (NVQ/SVQ) Level 2 or 3 in heating engineering or plumbing or electrical trades, or working towards a course in heating engineering or plumbing which will lead to a formal qualification, such as NVQ Level 2 or 3 heating and ventilation or plumbing or electrical installations, or have a number of years’ experience of conventional heating engineering or plumbing and electrical installations.

Course Overview:

This one-day course provides essential training on safe isolation procedures for low voltage electrical systems in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. It is designed to help reduce the risk of electric shock or injury by ensuring proper isolation methods are used when working on or near live electrical systems.

• Understand the legal responsibilities under electrical safety legislation
• Recognise dangers associated with low voltage electrical systems
• Learn the correct sequence for safely isolating electrical installations
• Use test equipment correctly to confirm safe isolation

Course Content:

• Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 – overview and implications
• Requirements for isolation and proving dead
• Lock-off and tagging procedures
• Use of approved test equipment (e.g. voltage indicators, proving units)
• Permits to work and documentation
• Practical demonstration of safe isolation on a range of systems
• Consequences of unsafe isolation practices

 

Assessment:

• Written or multiple-choice test
• Practical assessment (safe isolation of a mock installation)

BPEC accredited certificate

Upon successful completion, participants receive a BPEC Certificate of Competence, valid for 5 years, demonstrating proficiency in safe isolation practices and compliance with health and safety regulations.

A few of our courses don’t require qualifications, like the Solar PV Roof Installations – Practical Course, but it does help if you have some relevant experience.

We teach all of our theory courses at our training centre in Newcastle, our state of the art facility is a great place to learn! Class sizes are kept small so we can deliver focused, practical learning. You’re provided with all of the course materials, and any equipment needed to complete the course. 

Our practical courses are taught on site, and you get the opportunity to partake in live installations. If you enrol on a practical course, we will contact you to confirm the location.
