Course Overview:

This non-accredited one-day course is designed to provide a practical understanding of structural considerations when planning and installing solar PV systems on domestic and small commercial rooftops. Delegates will learn how to carry out basic roof assessments and perform load calculations to ensure the structure is suitable for PV installation, in line with MCS and industry best practice. No structural engineering background is required.

  • Introduction to structural principles for roof-mounted solar PV
  • Overview of typical UK roof types: timber, truss, rafter, purlin
  • Load types: dead load, live load, snow load, wind load, imposed load
  • Using span tables and manufacturer data
  • Calculating the total weight of PV systems per m²
  • Basic deflection and sag risk identification
  • Wind uplift basics and regional variation factors
  • Visual roof inspection guidance and condition assessment
  • Documenting structural suitability for installations
  • Examples and case studies

 

Assessment:

  • Informal practical exercises and group-based problem solving
  • Trainer-led discussions and scenario reviews

A Certificate of Completion will be issued Future Group Renewable Training to confirm participation and understanding of structural considerations for PV installations.

We teach all of our theory courses at our training centre in Newcastle, our state of the art facility is a great place to learn! Class sizes are kept small so we can deliver focused, practical learning. You’re provided with all of the course materials, and any equipment needed to complete the course. 

Our practical courses are taught on site, and you get the opportunity to partake in live installations. If you enrol on a practical course, we will contact you to confirm the location.
