Introduction
At Future Group Training, we speak to engineers every day who are curious about where the industry is heading – and one of the biggest questions we hear is: “Is there really a shortage of heat pump installers in the UK?”
The short answer is yes, and the demand is only going to grow.
We’re proud to offer specialist Heat Pump Engineering Courses in Newcastle, designed to meet the rising need for skilled, low-carbon heating professionals. Our BPEC-accredited training gives you everything you need to confidently install Air Source Heat Pumps – whether you’re a qualified engineer looking to upskill or a gas engineer considering a career change.
If you’re thinking about futureproofing your career, there’s never been a better time to step into the renewable sector.
The UK Needs More Heat Pump Engineers – Fast
According to Renewable Energy Installer & Specifier, there has already been a huge surge in qualified heat pump engineers – a 166% increase in just one year. That means we’ve gone from under 3,000 in 2022 to over 8,000 in 2023.
That’s amazing progress – but it’s still not enough.
To hit the UK government’s Net Zero targets, the country will need around 34,000 trained heat pump installers. This puts skilled engineers in a very strong position – with more work opportunities, better job security, and the chance to be part of the UK’s green transition.
Homeowners Are Catching On
As public awareness grows and the government offers support through schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, more and more homeowners are making the switch. In fact, in 2024, MCS reported over 250,000 certified heat pump installations – and that number is climbing rapidly.
So what does this mean for you? It means the heat pump industry is booming – and the demand for qualified professionals is going to continue rising for years to come.
