You can become a heat pump engineer by taking one of the following routes:

  • A college course
  • An apprenticeship
  • Working in a related field, like being a gas engineer

College Courses

To begin with, you could take a college course in a relevant subject like plumbing and heating. 

Embarking on these courses will teach you some of the core skills you’ll need to work with heat pumps. This will put you in a better position when you start applying for trainee roles. You could apply to become a trainee plumber, gas engineer or HVAC technician. 

Working within a company will give you hands-on experience with heating systems and pipework, which will be vital if you want to become a heat pump engineer. 

Once you’ve completed your course and had some industry experience, you will need to take some additional training, specifically for heat pumps.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for college courses may vary. Usually you will need:

– 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent. For T level courses this will need to include English and Maths. 

Apprenticeship

The apprenticeship route can be a fantastic way of getting into the industry, streamlining the process.

These apprenticeships can help you become a heat pump engineer:

  • Low Carbon Heating Technician Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Heat Network Maintenance Technician Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship

Entry Requirements

Usually you will need:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent. For advanced apprenticeships, this must include English and Maths. 

Working in a related field

You can start your journey by working in a related field, such as being a gas engineer, HVAC engineer or plumber. Then you could take additional training courses to become a heat pump engineer.

  • Low temperature heating and hot water systems.
  • How to install and maintain heat pumps.

You’ll start off working alongside a senior heat pump engineer, who will guide you and take your skills to the next level.

As you gain experience, you could move into a supervisor or managerial role. You could eventually manage a team of engineers, overseeing heat pump installations across the UK.

  • Set up your own business
  • Train apprentices
  • Teach courses in further education, at a college or a private company

Renewable Energy Installer & Specifier reported there has been a massive surge in the number of qualified heat pump installers across the UK. This highlights the fact it’s a growing sector, with exciting opportunities. There was a rise of 166% in the number of qualified installers, with the total number growing from under 3,000 in 2022 to 8,000 in 2023

To meet the government’s Net Zero goals, the UK will need around 34,000 heat pump engineers. In 2024 MCS reported that the UK has already reached 250,000 certified heat pump installations, with incentives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme encouraging homeowners to invest in a heat pump.
