Pre-requisites

Please check that you meet the requirements below before enrolling on this course:

• Candidates must hold a Level 3 NVQ or equivalent in Electrical Installation
• 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification (BS 7671)
• BPEC Solar PV qualification or equivalent is recommended but not essential

Learners must be competent electricians and hold one of the qualifications listed below or other qualifications listed in EAS tables A4.7 and 4.8 routes 1, 2, 3 and BS 7671: 2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations (18th Edition) qualification

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment) (2357)
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)(2357)
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification (5357)
  • Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker (2356)
  • Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services – Electrical Installation (Building and Structures)
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification.(2346)
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings
  • EAL Building Services Engineering (Level 3) – Electrotechnical Installation
  • ECS Gold Card (for domestic electrician), JIB Electrician (Not PAT tester only) or Approved  Electrician Card
  • Other Awarding Organisations equivalences will also be acceptable

For learners in Scotland: Any of the above or

  • SVQ in Electrical Installation at SCQF level 7 + Up to date BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical   Installations

Stand-alone technical certificates/vocationally related qualifications (VRQ) (non-competency based) are NOT acceptable

Course Overview:

This course delivers in-depth training on the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) for domestic and small commercial applications. It is aligned with current industry standards including BS 7671 (18th Edition) and the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems. Completion of the course supports compliance with MCS and future-proofing your skillset in the renewable energy sector.

 

Key Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the principles and applications of electrical energy storage
• Design systems to integrate with solar PV and the national grid
• Select and specify appropriate battery types (e.g., lithium-ion, lead-acid)
• Identify key components and configuration options
• Install and commission storage systems safely and in accordance with regulations
• Understand system protection, control, and monitoring
• Perform fault diagnosis, maintenance, and system handover

 

Course Content:

• Overview of battery storage technologies and chemistry
• System design considerations (on-grid, off-grid, hybrid)
• AC and DC-coupled systems
• Integration with PV, smart meters, and grid services
• Safety considerations and protective devices
• Electrical requirements under BS 7671 and the IET CoP
• Installation, commissioning, inspection, and testing
• Documentation and MCS compliance requirements
• Environmental and fire safety issues

 

Assessment:

• Written theory test (multiple choice or short answer)
• Practical assessment of system design and commissioning procedures

BPEC accredited certificate

Successful candidates receive a BPEC Certificate of Competence in Electrical Energy Storage Systems, enabling MCS registration and recognised by the renewable energy industry across the UK.

This course is suitable for:

• Qualified electricians already working with solar PV or other renewables
• Installers looking to expand into battery storage technology
• Professionals aiming to meet MCS installer requirements

A few of our courses don’t require qualifications, like the Solar PV Roof Installations – Practical Course, but it does help if you have some relevant experience.

We teach all of our theory courses at our training centre in Newcastle, our state of the art facility is a great place to learn! Class sizes are kept small so we can deliver focused, practical learning. You’re provided with all of the course materials, and any equipment needed to complete the course. 

Our practical courses are taught on site, and you get the opportunity to partake in live installations. If you enrol on a practical course, we will contact you to confirm the location.
